India has bolstered its humanitarian response to cyclone-hit Sri Lanka by deploying four additional naval ships to deliver critical relief supplies, the Indian Navy announced on Monday. This move is part of Operation Sagar Bandhu, a concerted effort to address the aftermath of the natural disaster.
Of the deployed vessels, LCU 54, LCU 51, and LCU 57 have already docked in Colombo with crucial aid materials handed over to local authorities. The fourth ship, INS Gharial, is scheduled to arrive in Trincomalee soon to continue the relief operations across affected regions.
This expanded naval deployment builds on previous assistance from INS Vikrant, INS Udaygiri, and INS Sukanya, which conducted search and rescue missions. According to officials, 1,000 tonnes of relief supplies, donated by Tamil Nadu's people, demonstrate India's enduring commitment to support Sri Lanka and reflect the Indian Navy's dedication to regional humanitarian aid and disaster readiness.
The initiative aligns with India's 'Mahasagar' vision, promoting regional cooperation and swift crisis response. Sri Lankan MP Namal Rajapaksa expressed gratitude toward India's ongoing assistance, following a meeting with Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha. The High Commissioner assured continued aid for Sri Lanka's recovery.
Indian Army engineers collaborate with Sri Lankan counterparts to restore essential infrastructure, such as the damaged bridge on the Paranthan-Karachchi-Mullaitivu road. This joint effort marks a significant stride in reconnecting impacted communities, bolstered by substantial supplies sent under Operation Sagar Bandhu.
