Social Media Sparks Over China's Islamophobia Stand
A social media post by the Chinese Mission to the UN, marking the International Day to combat Islamophobia, received backlash from Uyghur activists. They criticized China's claims of opposing Islamophobia, citing ongoing oppressive policies against Uyghur Muslims. The statement was labeled hypocritical and misleading by human rights advocates.

A heated debate erupted on social media platform X after a post by the Chinese Mission to the United Nations in observance of the International Day to combat Islamophobia. The post stressed the significance of resisting all forms of Islamophobia, encouraging dialogue, and fostering religious and cultural respect. It also affirmed China's commitment to collaborate with Islamic nations.
However, this declaration faced stern condemnation from Uyghur activists and leaders. Rushan Abbas, Chairwoman of the Executive Committee of the World Uyghur Congress, lambasted the post as astonishing in its audaciousness. She accused the Chinese government of targeting Islamic practices, with allegations of mosque demolitions, limitations on religious activities, and the incarceration of millions of Uyghurs in what the Chinese authorities term 'vocational training' centers. Abbas also drew attention to her sister's prolonged detention as a stark illustration of these policies.
Her views were echoed by Salih Hudayar of the East Turkistan Government in Exile, who attacked Beijing's statement as wildly hypocritical. He suggested it was a strategic ploy to mislead Muslim-majority nations and the global community and divert focus from accusations of genocide, crimes against humanity, and persistent oppression in the Uyghur region.
