Pakistan's Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, has hinted at the potential expansion of a regional defense and economic partnership to include Qatar and Turkiye. This initiative is positioned as a framework evolving into a broader security pact, designed to fortify regional cooperation amidst current global tensions.

Last year, Pakistan entered into a 'Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement' with Saudi Arabia, committing to jointly counter any aggression against either nation. Asif's recent comments suggest the inclusion of Qatar and Turkiye under this pact, signaling the emergence of an 'Islamic NATO', a concept being considered in light of regional security crises.

The Defence Minister emphasized that the proposed arrangement, partly finalized, is geared towards future regional stability and reduced external reliance. Asif clarified that this initiative is not a threat to any nation but is crucial for maintaining peace and fostering economic and defense collaboration in the region.

The agreement with Saudi Arabia was signed during Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's visit to Riyadh, reflecting a long-standing bond based on shared interests and defense cooperation.

India, responding to the Saudi-Pakistan defense pact, has indicated it will scrutinize the implications for its national security. The Ministry of External Affairs maintains that India's security remains a priority, acknowledging the strategic developments that have been underway between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
