Iran Enforces Toll on Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Tensions

Iran has announced plans to charge fees for services in the Strait of Hormuz, previously free, citing increasing tensions with the US and Israel. As vital global energy routes are threatened, major energy-importing nations like India seek assurances of stability and free navigation in this critical maritime corridor.

Iran is set to introduce charges for navigation, maritime rescue, traffic control, and shipping security services in the Strait of Hormuz, which previously came at no cost, according to Iran's Ambassador to India, Dr. Mohammad Fathali. This decision has been fueled by escalating tensions with the United States and Israel, whom Iran blames for compromising regional and global energy security through their military actions.

During an interview with ANI, Fathali emphasized that while the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the safest routes for energy transit globally, the geopolitical climate has necessitated a shift in service provision policies. He assured that the security of these territorial waters, shared with Oman, is handled by both nations, dismissing suggestions of levying tolls despite the planned fee introduction for services.

The issue was recently underscored at the Quad Foreign Ministers' meeting, where the safety and uninterrupted flow of global commerce was highlighted, along with criticism against attacks on commercial vessels. The meeting reiterated adherence to international law, specifically UNCLOS, opposing toll impositions inconsistent with such guidelines. The US has responded with sanctions on Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority, accusing it of exploiting vessels transiting through these waters.
