Escalating Tensions: China's Strategic Moves Around Taiwan's Pratas Islands

Since February 2024, China's coast guard has markedly increased patrols near Taiwan's Pratas Islands, raising alarms in Taipei. This surge follows a deadly incident involving a Chinese speedboat near Kinmen County. Observers see these maneuvers as part of China's broader strategy to pressure Taiwan.

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, China's coast guard has dramatically increased its patrol frequency around Taiwan's Pratas Islands since February 2024, as confirmed by Taiwan's Coast Guard Administration (CGA) and reported by Taipei Times. Previously sporadic, these transits now exceed 30 annually, indicating a more permanent Chinese presence.

This strategic shift follows a critical incident on February 14, 2024, when a Chinese speedboat breached restricted waters near Kinmen County, defying Taiwan's coast guard requests for inspection before capsizing in its escape, leading to the deaths of two crew members. Following this, Beijing has reportedly adjusted its operational dynamics around Pratas Island, potentially to evaluate Taiwan's defense responses.

Chinese incursions into Taiwan's maritime spaces have grown increasingly strategic, often featuring single or paired coast guard vessels venturing along Taiwan's sea boundaries or circulating strategic areas to engage Taiwanese resources. Alarmingly, Chinese vessels frequently disable their Automatic Identification Systems, complicating Taiwan's efforts to monitor their movements. Taiwan has responded by deploying its patrol ships to shadow these incursions while issuing multilingual warnings.
