Selina Hayat Ivy, a prominent Awami League leader and former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation, was released from Kashimpur jail on Wednesday night. Her release follows that of Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, marking another senior party member securing bail. This event comes amid tense political dynamics in Bangladesh.

Upon her release, Ivy expressed gratitude to the current administration and called for an inclusive government approach. 'I want everyone together to establish a humane government,' she said, advocating for clemency towards other innocent detainees. Ivy was arrested at her residence in September last year during the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. The interim government took charge after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India during a student-led uprising.

Since the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) formed the government post-February 12 elections, Ivy is among the few Awami League members to obtain bail. As the BNP administration settles, international observers are attentive to the Awami League's future; the party's political activities remain banned. The International Crisis Group urged the new government to address the ban's sustainability, given the party's historical political importance.
