India has achieved another milestone in its growing agricultural export sector with the first-ever sea shipment of botanical-infused ready-to-cook millet functional foods from Karnataka to New Zealand. The consignment, weighing one metric tonne, was exported by Bengaluru-based M/s Infini Agrotek LLP on 3 June 2026. Facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), the shipment reflects rising international demand for innovative food products made from traditional Indian grains.
The export also highlights the increasing global appeal of value-added millet products as consumers around the world seek healthier and more sustainable food options.
Trade promotion efforts help company reach global buyers
The export order was secured after the company actively participated in several APEDA-supported international trade events, including World Food India 2025, Indus Food 2025 and Gulfood 2026. These exhibitions provided opportunities to engage with overseas buyers, build new business relationships and showcase innovative millet-based products to international markets. The New Zealand order emerged from these sustained marketing and networking efforts.
APEDA Chairman Abhishek Dev virtually flagged off the shipment and congratulated the company on successfully entering a new international market. He praised the development of innovative millet-based products and encouraged the exporter to continue using APEDA's trade promotion platforms to expand its global footprint. Officials believe such success stories demonstrate how targeted export promotion initiatives can help Indian businesses connect with buyers across the world and create new opportunities in emerging food categories.
Growing demand expected to benefit farmers and food processors
The export of botanical-infused millet functional foods is expected to create positive ripple effects across the agricultural value chain, particularly for millet farmers who could benefit from higher demand and improved market access. Millets have become an increasingly important part of India's agricultural export portfolio due to their nutritional value, climate resilience and growing popularity among health-conscious consumers. Demand has expanded in several international markets where consumers are looking for nutritious alternatives to conventional grains.
The development of value-added products is also creating opportunities for food processors, exporters and entrepreneurs while helping diversify India's agri-food exports. APEDA said it remains committed to supporting agricultural exports through market development programmes, capacity-building initiatives and participation in major trade fairs around the world. The successful shipment to New Zealand is being seen as another step towards strengthening India's position in the global millet market and expanding export opportunities for innovative food products.
