Nithya Raman, an Indian-American urban planner, is leading the race for Los Angeles Mayor after a close vote count. Garnering close to 40% of votes, Raman is ahead by 3,000 over Republican opponent Spencer Pratt. Her progress mirrors her growing influence since her 2020 City Council victory.
Indian-American Nithya Raman is showing promising leads in the Los Angeles Mayor race ahead of the November elections, as reported by CNN. In the latest updates, Raman has secured approximately 40% of the nearly 48,000 votes counted in Los Angeles County, pulling ahead of rival candidate Spencer Pratt by 3,000 votes.
Since the end of the polls on June 2, Raman has demonstrated significant gains, outperforming competitors Karen Bass and Spencer Pratt by a margin of 43,000 votes over Pratt. CNN highlighted that the latest reports have been the most favorable for Raman, as she maintained a lead with 40% of each batch of votes, compared to Pratt's 18%.
The election is officially nonpartisan; however, Pratt is a registered Republican and Raman has positioned herself as a progressive candidate. According to CNN, the vote count in California is prolonged due to its predominantly mail-in system, allowing ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted for up to seven days afterward.
Nithya Raman, a distinguished urban planner with degrees from Harvard and MIT, currently serves as the Los Angeles City Council member for District 4. In 2020, she made history as the first Asian-American and South Asian woman elected to the council. Her achievements include defeating an incumbent councilmember for the first time in 17 years. Raman's tenure has been marked by efforts to address homelessness, build affordable housing, and pursue the city’s climate agenda with urgency.
