China's Construction Giants Under Fire for Safety Failures
China’s national safety regulators have summoned state-owned construction giants over safety failures following major incidents, including a deadly road collapse and a bridge collapse. Allegations include negligence, falsifications, and illegal subcontracting. Regulators demand concrete actions to prevent future disasters, highlighting the repetition of accident hazards found in inspections.
China's national safety regulators have summoned the state-owned giants, China Communications Construction Company and Power Construction Corporation of China, on Wednesday over alleged safety failures in connection with two major incidents.
The companies have been accused of negligence, falsifications, illegal subcontracting, cutting corners, and safety management failures. These issues contributed to the collapse of a road in May 2024, killing 52 people in southern China, and a bridge collapse in November 2025 in the country's southwest, the emergency management ministry revealed.
Regulators emphasized the repetition of accident hazards in inspections and demanded immediate and effective actions from the companies to prevent future disasters. The companies were not available for comment outside of regular office hours, according to the statement.
