Avalanche F Calvert injured, out for Game 3

Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Calvert was not available to play in Game 3 of the second-round series against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday after suffering an upper-body injury in Game 2 on Sunday. Calvert took a major hit from Sharks defenseman Brent Burns near the end of Sunday's game, shortly after getting the puck to Nathan MacKinnon for an empty-net goal, which gave the Avalanche a 4-2 lead and proved to be the game-winner in the 4-3 victory at San Jose. Colorado's win evened the best-of-seven series at 1-1.

According to Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, Calvert will by replaced in the lineup by Sven Andrighetto, a four-year veteran who collected 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) during the regular season. "He's a player we really value," Avalanche defenseman Ian Cole said of Calvert in an article in The Denver Post. "We're going to miss him, and we're going to have to step up accordingly. It's stuff like that that makes a difference. It can't be overstated how much those small things matter."

For the Sharks, injured forwards Joe Pavelski and Joonas Donskoi didn't make the trip to Denver after missing Games 1 and 2. Pavelski, the team captain, led San Jose in the regular season with 38 goals, and also collected 26 assists. Both players were hurt during the Sharks' first-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights. Pavelski suffered an apparent head injury while Donskoi's ailment remains undisclosed.
