International Labour Day was celebrated throughout the State on Wednesday despite the inclement weather. The main function was organized in the State capital by the All Arunachal Pradesh Workers Union (AAPWU) at Nyokum Lapang here, where a large number of workers participated.

All Arunachal Pradesh Public Transport Federation (AAPPTF) president Dobing Sonam and All Garku Abu Welfare Society (AGAWS) president Taba Taku attended the function as chief guest and guest of honour. Addressing the function, Sonam said that the labour force is the biggest factor for all-round development. He exhorted the workers' community to work sincerely and shoulder the responsibility in nation building.

"There have been complaining that a few workers do not carry their work efficiently and sincerely but always ask for an increase in salary. They should change their attitude as everybody's support is required for the all-round development of our State," Sonam added.

Referring to the memorandum submitted on the occasion, Sonam said that the rights and privileges of labourers and workers need to be addressed by the government.

He exuded hope that the new government would give natural justice, rights, and privileges as per the demand of several labour organizations, including AAPWU.

Taku in his deliberation elaborated the need for the formation of labour unions and other organizations in the greater interest of the labour and the workers' community.

Reports of the celebration of the day also poured in from various parts of the State.

At Tawang, the North East Border Road Organisation Labourers union (NE BROLU) celebrated this day at Jang outdoor stadium, Jalley Sonam, Chairman Arunachal Pradesh Building and other construction workers welfare Board(APB&OCWWB)graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Leki Gombu, Chairman Jang Cooperative society as Guest of Honour. Vice president BROLU, Dorjee in his welcome speech conveyed best wishes to all the workers, while its President Leki Tsering spoke on the importance of the day.

Tsering informed the gathering that the union shall meet Prime minister and apprise him with the problems being faced by its members. He further thanked Chief Minister Pema Khandu for conveying their grievances at the central level.

Guest of Honour Leki Gombu, informed that the Chief Minister couldn't attend the programme due to pre-occupation but has conveyed his best wishes to all the workers and has assured to look into their grievances.

Chairman APB&OCWWB Jalley Sonam in his speech urged the members of BRO workers to register themselves under Labour welfare board of Arunachal Pradesh through Registering Officers to get various welfare and benefits being provided by the govt to laborers. He also remembered Late Dorjee Khandu former Chief Minister for making possible this Labour welfare board in Arunachal Pradesh during his government.

The Labour units from different locations of Tawang district presented cultural programmes to mark the day in a colourful way.

At Aalo, the International Labour Day was celebrated by Joint Working Committee of Arunachal Trade Union and NE BRO Labour Union in collaboration with District Health Society at Gumin Kiin here.

Attending the function, West Siang Deputy Commissioner Swetika Sachan said that role of the nation's workforce has been tremendous in the socio-economic development of the country and exhorted the labour community to work with renewed zeal and commitment to keep up the good works in nation-building.

Government has enacted labour laws and various welfare measures over a period of time to safeguard the interests of the labourers, she added.

Guest of Honour, Kipa Tame, Zonal Secretary JWCAPTU highlighted the efforts taken by the Working Committee to improve the working conditions of the workers in the state. Tracing the history of Labour movements in the world and India, Abhinav Kumar, DFO Aalo stressed on drawing inspiration from the past to make the institution of the workforce more vibrant in the days to come.

May Day was also celebrated by All Arunachal Pradesh Workers' Union at APPWU office, Old Market, Aalo. Genya Ete President Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh unfurled the union flag. President AAPWU Tumar Bagra and Secretary Gumli Bagra highlighted the significance and role of the union to the workers present.
