Jeremy Corbyn announced on Friday that he will not lead the UK Labour party into another general election, following what he described as a "very disappointing night" for the main opposition party of the country. "This is obviously a very disappointing night for the Labour Party with the result that we have got," said Corbyn, as cited by Sputnik.

Corbyn's statement came after both the exit polls and initial official results showed a clear victory for the Conservative Party in the 2019 general elections. A victory for incumbent Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Conservatives would mean that they will plough ahead with the Brexit, dashing all chances of a second referendum over the issue.

The exit poll had suggested the Conservatives would win 368 seats in the 650-seat parliament, with the main opposition Labour party trailing on 191, as per a report by the Washington Post. The party needs 322 seats to control Parliament -- and push through Johnson's Brexit plan, The Washington Post reported.

This was Britain's third general election in a little more than four years, and the second since the June 2016 Brexit referendum.
