Four minor girls drowned in a pond in Assam's Nagaon district on Friday, police said.

A group of five girls were playing near a pond in Sutirpar village, under Juria Police Station, when four of them suddenly slipped and fell into the water, a police officer said.

Villagers rushed to the spot to rescue the girls, but could only manage to retrieve their bodies, he said.

The deceased have been identified as Nur Nessa (15), Arsina Khatun (10), Rahima Khatun (12) and Imrana Khatun (6).

Locals blamed the owner of the pond for the incident as there was allegedly no fencing around it.

An investigation has been launched, police added.
