It could take 'several days' before calm returns to the riot-hit overseas French territory of New Caledonia due to the current context of sustained political tensions, said French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday.

"Our target is to take back full control of the various areas which have been hit by disorder and violence," said Macron, speaking at the territory's capital of Noumea.
