Indian Coast Guard Steps Up Preparations for Cyclone ‘Remal’ to Mitigate Impact

Nine disaster relief teams have been strategically positioned in locations including Haldia, Paradip, Gopalpur, and Frazerganj, ready to deliver immediate assistance if required.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has launched extensive preparatory measures to mitigate the impact of Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’, which is intensifying in the central Bay of Bengal. Expected to evolve into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by May 25, 2024, it is forecasted to make landfall in the North/North-West Bay of Bengal near the West Bengal Coast on the night of May 26-27.

In coordination with state administrations and stakeholders, the ICG is ensuring a synchronized response to potential emergencies. Continuous updates are being provided to facilitate preparedness and coordinated action among all concerned parties.

The ICG's Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip are issuing regular multilingual Very High-Frequency alerts, advising merchant mariners in transit to take necessary precautions. Additionally, ICG ships and aircraft are conducting surveillance along the storm's projected path to provide timely assistance and support.

The ICG has also notified the Bangladesh Coast Guard, urging them to undertake necessary preparations and disseminate alerts to fishermen and merchant marine vessels. Merchant vessels at anchorages have been alerted, and port authorities have been advised to take appropriate actions. Despite an existing fishing ban, the Fisheries Department has been cautioned to inform local boats about the impending storm.

By taking these proactive measures, the ICG aims to minimize loss of life and property at sea as Cyclonic Storm ‘Remal’ approaches.
