In a dramatic and headline-grabbing incident, Suneeta Potam, a 25-year-old tribal activist, was apprehended by Bijapur police in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Potam, who faces charges related to 12 Naxalite cases including murder, was living under a false identity when detained.
According to Bastar Range Inspector General of Police Sundarraj P, Potam hails from Korcholi village and is a key figure in the Maoist urban network. 'At least 12 warrants are pending against her in three Bijapur police stations,' he stated. However, the PUCL see her as a staunch human rights defender battling police atrocities.
The PUCL has demanded her immediate release, asserting the arrest violates Supreme Court guidelines. They allege Potam was detained while staying in Raipur to complete her education. The group called for an independent probe to investigate claims of false charges imposed on her.
