Over 500 Suspects Arrested in E Cape's Operation Shanela Amid Elections

Between May 27 and June 2, 2024, police in the province arrested a total of 537 suspects for various crimes, including house robbery and dealing in illicit drugs.

Over 500 suspects were apprehended last week in the Eastern Cape during Operation Shanela, demonstrating the unwavering commitment of the South African Police Service (SAPS) despite the demanding schedule of the National and Provincial Elections.

"The demanding schedule of the National and Provincial Elections on police officers did not dampen their commitment to the core function of combating crime, as over 500 suspects were nabbed in Operation Shanela in the Eastern Cape last week," stated the SAPS.

As South Africans participated in the seventh National and Provincial Elections, which included special votes on Monday and Tuesday, followed by Voting Day on Wednesday, May 29, police in the Eastern Cape were actively engaged in maintaining law and order.

Between May 27 and June 2, 2024, police in the province arrested a total of 537 suspects for various crimes, including house robbery and dealing in illicit drugs. Among those arrested were 18 motorists charged with drunk driving. Additionally, 141 individuals were fined for selling liquor without a license, and 11,592 liters of liquor were seized.

The operation also achieved significant success in marine life policing. A joint effort between SAPS and the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Environment led to the disruption of abalone syndicates, resulting in the confiscation of 2,913 units of abalone. Moreover, an assortment of illicit drugs with an estimated street value of over R5,000 was confiscated.

A total of 21 suspects were arrested for violating the Firearms Control Act. These achievements were attributed solely to Operation Shanela.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheli Mene praised the police force for their dedication to ensuring community safety and security. "Even though members were deployed on election duties across the province, our men and women in blue ensured that day-to-day policing continued and criminals were not given the space to carry out their devious deeds," said Mene.
