In a significant move, the Delhi High Court has instructed the city's Chief Secretary to undertake a door-to-door survey to gauge the population of senior citizens in the capital. This decision aims to address the acute scarcity of old age homes and ensure better living conditions for the elderly.
The court has mandated that the existing petition be treated as a formal representation, to be resolved as swiftly as possible within a 12-week window. A bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora underscored the urgency of the matter.
The directive came in response to a petition by Salek Chand Jain, who had also called for a separate database of crimes against senior citizens. Advocate Dinesh P Rajbhar presented that Delhi currently operates only two government-affiliated old age homes, insufficient for the growing elderly population.
