Authorities in Vietnam officially charged journalist and historian Truong Huy San, known by his pen name Huy Duc, with violating national security laws on Friday. This development has drawn significant attention to the nation's stringent crackdown on press freedom.

According to reports from Tuoi Tre newspaper and other state media, San faces allegations of “abusing the rights of freedom and democracy to infringe upon the interests of the State.” The charges stem from his critical writings on Facebook.

Prominent lawyer Tran Dinh Trien was also charged under the same Article 331 of the Penal Code, which prescribes a prison term of two to seven years. Both men have been detained and their residences searched by security officials. This marks an alarming rise in the arrests of reformers, according to rights groups like The 88 Project.
