In a heart-wrenching tragedy, the Karunapuram locality in Kallakurichi echoed with the cries of bereaved families as illicit arrack claimed 34 lives. About 100 others are receiving treatment.
The northern district's incident has ignited a political storm, with opposition parties demanding Chief Minister M K Stalin's resignation. The ruling DMK has countered, asserting such issues are not exclusive to its regime. Stalin stated the deaths were caused by 'methanol mixed arrack' and promised special care for those hospitalized.
Chief Minister Stalin, after reviewing the situation, announced the formation of a one-man commission led by retired Madras High Court Judge B Gokuldas to recommend measures to prevent such incidents and investigate the causes of the deaths. So far, four individuals linked to the sale of the poisonous arrack have been arrested. The CM declared Rs 10 lakh compensation for each victim's family and Rs 50,000 for those undergoing treatment. The state Home Secretary and Director General of Police are to submit a report following their inspection. A tough stance will be taken against those who supplied methanol for the lethal concoction.
