The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) has strongly condemned the decision by Delhi LG V K Saxena to approve the prosecution of acclaimed author Arundhati Roy and former Central University of Kashmir professor Sheikh Showkat Hussain under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

In a statement, the SKM described the UAPA as 'draconian' and called for its immediate repeal. The two individuals are facing charges for allegedly making provocative speeches at an event back in 2010. The SKM criticized the BJP-led NDA government, asserting that it is attempting to prosecute dissenting voices within the country illegally.

The agricultural union also recalled how the National Investigation Agency has detained several leading intellectuals and activists on what they claim are false charges, urging the government to respect democratic principles and release all political prisoners held under the UAPA.
