EU Greenlights Accession Talks with Ukraine and Moldova

The European Union officially approves the start of accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. The talks are set to begin on June 25 in Luxembourg, furthering both nations' ambitions to join the 27-member bloc despite prolonged accession processes and geopolitical challenges.

In a significant move, European Union countries have formally approved the commencement of accession negotiations with war-torn Ukraine and Moldova, marking an essential step in these nations' protracted efforts to join the 27-nation bloc.

Belgium, currently presiding over the EU, announced that member states have established a negotiating framework, enabling negotiations to commence on Tuesday, June 25, in Luxembourg. The discussions will be initiated through two intergovernmental conferences. Despite last year's agreement by EU leaders, following a positive evaluation from the EU's executive branch, the process of aligning the candidate countries' laws and standards with those of the EU could take several years.

Both Ukraine and Moldova view EU membership as a conduit to wealth and stability. Amid escalating tensions with Russia, Ukraine applied for EU accession shortly after the 2022 Russian invasion, a move supported by the EU's financial aid and political solidarity. Moldova, facing allegations of Russian interference, remains cautious of Moscow's intentions, especially after recent appeals by Transnistrian authorities.
