The Supreme Court emphasized on Tuesday that bail matters should not be adjourned unnecessarily, expressing hope that the Delhi High Court will decide the bail plea of jailed former AAP minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case at the next hearing.
A bench of Justices Manoj Misra and SVN Bhatti issued this observation while dealing with Jain's plea against the high court's six-week adjournment of his bail hearing. The high court is set to review Jain’s bail plea on July 9.
Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Jain, highlighted a substantial legal question concerning whether the filing of an incomplete charge sheet by the investigating agency could be used to deny an accused their right to default bail. He noted this issue is before a three-judge apex court bench and sought alignment of Jain's plea with it. However, the court maintained that the high court should first address the case on its merits.
In 2017, the CBI filed an FIR against Jain under the Prevention of Corruption Act, leading to his 2022 arrest by the ED.
