India's Deep Concerns Over Myanmar's Violence and Its Border Implications

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister U Than Shwe to discuss India's concerns about the violence and instability in Myanmar and its impact on the Indian border. Jaishankar emphasized the need for credible security for ongoing projects and an early return to democratic governance.

New Delhi: India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed profound concerns over the violence and instability in Myanmar during a meeting with Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister, U Than Shwe, who was transiting through New Delhi on Wednesday.

This marked the first high-level engagement with a senior leader of Myanmar's military junta since their takeover in February 2021. Jaishankar highlighted the adverse effects on the Indian border, particularly emphasizing issues like illegal narcotics, arms smuggling, and the plight of Indian nationals trapped in Myawaddy.

The minister also pressed for credible security measures for Indian projects in Myanmar and reiterated India's readiness to assist in the democratic transition process. His comments come amidst serious unrest in Myanmar, affecting border states like Manipur and Mizoram, spurring the Union Home Ministry to consider enhanced border security measures.
