Karnataka Drafts Bill to Safeguard Gig Workers' Rights

The Karnataka Government has proposed the Karnataka Platform Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2024, intending to protect gig workers' rights. The bill includes creating a welfare board, fund, and grievance mechanism. Consultations with industry stakeholders led to this initiative, focusing on gig workers' health, safety, and social security.

The Karnataka Government has unveiled the draft of the Karnataka Platform Based Gig Workers (Social Security and Welfare) Bill, 2024. This crucial legislation aims to safeguard the rights of gig workers and introduces a comprehensive welfare board, fund, and grievance redressal mechanism.

In an exclusive discussion with PTI, Labour Minister Santosh Lad revealed that exhaustive consultations were held with stakeholders such as Flipkart, Amazon, Zomato, and Swiggy. The primary focus, Lad emphasized, is on the health and safety of gig workers who often work long hours, compromising their well-being. He stated, 'Our priority is the longevity of their life and family welfare.'

The draft legislation stipulates that gig workers will be registered with the state, irrespective of their tenure. They will be provided a unique ID and access to social security schemes, ensuring comprehensive protection and support.
