Allahabad High Court Adjourns Afzal Ansari's Appeal in 2005 BJP MLA Murder Case

The Allahabad High Court adjourned the hearing on Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari's appeal until July 3. Ansari, sentenced to four years in jail under the Gangsters Act for the 2005 murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai, continues to challenge his conviction. The case also involves petitions for a harsher sentence.

The Allahabad High Court has postponed the hearing of Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari's appeal until July 3. The appeal challenges a trial court's decision to sentence Ansari to four years in prison for his involvement in the 2005 murder of BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai under the Gangsters Act.

The High Court is concurrently considering petitions from both the Uttar Pradesh government and Piyush Kumar, the son of Krishnanand Rai, which advocate for a more severe punishment for Ansari.

Justice Sanjay Kumar Singh accepted a joint request from all parties to defer the hearing until Wednesday. Ansari’s case has significant political implications, as the Representation of the People Act mandates disqualification for MPs or state legislators sentenced to two years or more in prison.
