At the 75th anniversary summit, NATO expressed deep concerns about the expanding strategic partnership between Russia and China, as well as China's coercive policies.
The Washington Summit Declaration highlighted the serious challenges these relationships pose to the interests, security, and values of the alliance.
NATO is contending with various threats, including hybrid, cyber, and space activities from both state and non-state actors, according to the declaration.
The summit also marked Sweden's accession as NATO's 32nd member, strengthening the alliance's presence in the High North and Baltic Sea.
Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine was underscored as a significant disruption to Euro-Atlantic peace, making Russia the most direct threat to the allies' security.
Global terrorism remains an asymmetric threat to international stability, the declaration stated.
To counteract these threats, NATO committed to bolstering its deterrence and defense, and increasing support to Ukraine for its fight for freedom.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the need to reinforce partnerships in the Indo-Pacific to counteract the alignment of Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.
NATO will establish a coordination and security assistance program for Ukraine to ensure sustained long-term support, which Stoltenberg described as essential to the alliance’s own security interests.
