In a landmark decision applauded by the LGBTQIA+ community, M Anusuya, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 2013 batch, has successfully affirmed her gender in official records, and will henceforth be known as M Anukathir Surya. The Ministry of Finance approved the request on July 9, 2024, updating his gender from female to male.

This move has been regarded as a serious step toward inclusion, given the government's role as the largest employer in the country. Author Sharif D Rangnekar, who identifies as gay, described the approval as a 'welcome step,' and expressed hope that it would set a precedent for other government offices to follow.

Another similar case includes Aishwarya Rutuparna Pradhan, India's first transgender civil servant, who changed her gender identity to the 'third gender' in 2015, following a Supreme Court ruling. Members of the LGBTQIA+ community hope such decisions will foster a more inclusive environment in government institutions, despite the persistent challenges they face.
