French authorities reported Friday that four migrants died in an attempt to cross the English Channel from France to the U.K.
The incident occurred when their inflatable boat capsized near Boulogne-sur-Mer, northern France. The French coast guard rescued 63 survivors, as stated by the local prefecture.
A French navy patrol boat had spotted the overcrowded and deflating vessel early morning off the northern coast. Many migrants were found in the water.
Crossing the English Channel remains a life-threatening endeavor for migrants, with an estimated 30,000 people making the attempt in 2023, according to U.K. government data.
