Following the death of a tribal youth, several shops were torched and houses damaged in Tripura’s Dhalai district, police said on Saturday. Authorities imposed prohibitory orders after the incident, which involved a 19-year-old college student sustaining fatal injuries in a group clash on July 7.
Local law enforcement reported additional police deployment in the village, and Internet services have been suspended. Four arrests have been made in connection with the youth’s death.
Police sources revealed that the deceased, Parmeshwar Reang, was injured during a clash at Gandatwisa market. Initially treated locally, he was later transferred to GBP Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. Post his death, arson and vandalism occurred, leading to the imposition of prohibitory orders.
To de-escalate tensions, the Gandatwisa SDM organized a peace meeting. Tipra Motha leader Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma condemned the killing and urged for justice and restraint.
