Union Home Minister Amit Shah will on Thursday chair the seventh apex level meeting of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD), aimed at bolstering Indian efforts against drug trafficking and abuse. The session, held in Delhi, is set to unveil a national narcotics helpline—'MANAS' (Madak Padarth Nisedh Asuchna Kendra)—and inaugurate the Narcotics Control Bureau's (NCB) zonal office in Srinagar.
In addition, Shah will release NCB's annual report for 2023 and a compendium on 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' through an official release. The central government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has embraced a 'zero tolerance policy' to combat drug trafficking, with an eye on a drug-free India by 2047.
The Ministry of Home Affairs’ strategy includes strengthening institutional structures, enhancing coordination among all narcotics agencies, and launching extensive public awareness campaigns. Core initiatives involve NCORD meetings, forming a joint coordination committee for large cases, establishing anti-narcotics task forces in states, and creating special NDPS and fast-track courts to expedite drug-related cases.
