California Governor Gavin Newsom has enacted a new law prohibiting school districts from implementing policies that mandate schools to inform parents if their child seeks to change their gender identification.
The legislation specifically bans school staff from disclosing a student's gender identity or sexual orientation without the child's consent. Supporters argue that this will safeguard LGBTQ+ students living in unsupportive households, while critics claim it impedes schools' ability to be transparent with parents.
The new law has ignited further debate in the ongoing national discussion about the rights of parents and LGBTQ+ students within school districts.
Introducing the legislation, California Assembly member Chris Ward cited a “growing national attack'' on LGBTQ people. “While many LGBTQ youth have supportive families, some unfortunately still face rejection and potential harm if prematurely outed,” Ward stated in a recent Assembly session.
The law follows several California school districts' policies requiring parent notification for gender identity changes, which met resistance from Democratic state officials advocating for student privacy rights.
However, Jonathan Zachreson, a proponent of parental notification policies, opposes the law, arguing that informing parents is essential for children's well-being and maintaining trust between schools and parents.
