Farmer Activist Navdeep Singh Released After High Court Bail Order

Farmer activist Navdeep Singh has been released from Ambala Central Jail after being granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He was arrested in connection with the 'Delhi Chalo' march. Protests and plans to honor him were modified due to police prohibitory orders in Ambala.

Farmer activist Navdeep Singh walked out of Ambala Central Jail following a bail order from the Punjab and Haryana High Court in a case linked to the farmers' February 13 'Delhi Chalo' march.

Navdeep was arrested by Haryana Police from Mohali on March 28 on various charges, including rioting and attempted murder. He was released Tuesday evening after nearly four months in custody.

Initially, farmer leaders planned to gherao the office of the Ambala superintendent of police in protest of Navdeep's arrest but canceled after his release. However, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher reported that some leaders were detained by police while attempting to escort Navdeep to the Shambhu border for an honor ceremony.

Farmer leaders, including Jagjit Singh Dallewal, expressed frustration over the Haryana government's restrictions, which prohibited farmers from entering Ambala district to hold processions. Prohibitory orders were enforced to prevent any gatherings.

Known as the 'water cannon man' for his role in the 2020 farmers' agitation, Navdeep Singh's recent case reflects ongoing tensions over farmers' demands like the legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Farmers have been camping at the Punjab-Haryana border since February 13, clashing with police who set up barricades. On July 10, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the removal of these barriers on an ‘experimental basis,’ a decision now challenged by the Haryana government in the Supreme Court, with a hearing set for July 22.
