A Russian court unexpectedly announced on Friday that it would deliver its verdict in the espionage trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich within hours. State prosecutors have demanded an 18-year sentence for Gershkovich, a 32-year-old American who denies the charges, claiming they are baseless.

The trial, which began last month in Yekaterinburg, has been conducted at an unusual pace, fueling talks of a potential U.S.-Russia prisoner exchange. The Kremlin has not commented on these speculations. 'I'll leave your question unanswered,' said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov when asked about the possibility.

Gershkovich was arrested in March on accusations of gathering secret information for the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. However, his newspaper, the U.S. government, and the journalist himself have refuted these claims, stating he was merely carrying out his journalistic duties. The U.S. has called for his immediate release, terming the trial a 'sham.'
