Controversial Eateries Order Sparks Nationwide Debate

Muzaffarnagar Police's directive for eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display owners' names has extended across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, stirring widespread controversy. Opposition parties and some ruling alliance members argue it targets Muslim traders, whereas the government claims it aims to prevent criminal incidents and maintain social harmony.

Days after Muzaffarnagar Police mandated eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display owners' names, the Uttar Pradesh government extends this contentious order statewide. Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed similar measures exist in Uttarakhand.

The directive has faced backlash from opposition parties and some ruling allies, who argue it predominantly targets Muslim traders. Despite opposition, a state spokesperson indicated a formal order might soon be issued.

Amidst the controversy, Haridwar's SSP Pramendra Dobhal emphasized plans for rigorous enforcement, including mandatory staff verification and a ban on meat sales along the route. Critics, however, claim the move foments communal tension and normalizes economic boycotts.
