A court in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district has ordered police custody for Jamaluddin Sardar, accused of torturing a woman during an unauthorized kangaroo court held at his home.
Authorities allege that Sardar chained and beat the woman in early July, amidst other similar incidents. The woman reported him, leading to his arrest this Friday.
Appearing before the Baruipur Sub-divisional Court, Sardar was remanded to police custody for nine days, falling short of the requested 14-day remand. Officials also aim to search his residence for further evidence.
Two of Sardar’s associates were previously detained. The BJP and CPI(M) have accused the ruling Trinamool Congress of protecting Sardar, a claim denied by local TMC MLA Saukat Mollah.
