Heart-Wrenching Aftermath: Mahmoud's Painful Struggle Post Israeli Airstrike

Four-year-old Mahmoud Abdel Athim al-Saafin continues to wake up screaming from the excruciating pain of severe burns caused by an Israeli airstrike on a Gaza school where his family sought refuge, his father Abdel Athim al-Saafin shared.

Tragically, Mahmoud's two-year-old sister, Maysar, was killed in the July 14 strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp, leaving her body almost unrecognizable, described by her distraught father as a 'lump of coal.' Mahmoud's face, legs, and one arm remain heavily bandaged as he endures the agony in a crowded hospital.

The child’s suffering is compounded as painkillers wear off after a few hours, forcing his father to plead for additional medication. Saafin recounted the terror of the attack, explaining that a second missile struck amidst rescue efforts, causing 'massive destruction.' Despite Israeli claims of targeting militants and using precise munitions, the airstrike resulted in 17 deaths and 80 injuries, according to Gaza health officials.

UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, reported multiple strikes on schools, violating the rules of war. Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini condemned these actions, emphasizing that schools should never be used for military purposes. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to significant casualties on both sides, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
