EU Commission Warns Slovakia on NGO Law

The European Commission has warned Slovakia against implementing a new law requiring NGOs with foreign funding to label themselves as such. Following Hungary's example could trigger legal action from the EU, which has faced similar issues with Hungary and Poland. The warnings come ahead of the EU's annual rule of law report release.

The European Commission has issued a stern warning to Slovakia, threatening immediate legal action if the government advances with a proposed law requiring NGOs receiving foreign funding to label themselves as 'organisations with foreign support'.

European Commission Vice President Vera Jourova made these remarks during a visit to Bratislava, emphasizing the potential repercussions ahead of the EU's annual rule of law report release.

Recalling Hungary's similar legislation from 2017, which was overturned by the European Court of Justice in 2021, Jourova highlighted the EU's readiness to initiate an infringement procedure for any violation of EU law.
