Security forces on patrol in Chhattisgarh's Kondagaon district successfully averted a potential tragedy by recovering two IEDs planted by Naxalites, police reported on Wednesday.

The Improvised Explosive Devices, each weighing 5 kg, were hidden beneath the ground to target District Reserve Guard and police patrol teams between Kotokodo and Kilenar villages within Iragaon police station jurisdiction on Tuesday, an official source confirmed.

The Bomb Disposal Squad subsequently defused the IEDs, preventing any possible harm.

Naxalites frequently plant such explosives to attack security forces during patrolling operations in the Bastar division, an area comprising seven districts. From December 2023 to June this year, 273 Naxal-related incidents were recorded in Chhattisgarh, including 92 encounters between security forces and Maoists, as stated by the state government.

During these incidents and encounters, 19 security personnel were killed, 88 were injured, while 34 civilians lost their lives to Maoist violence. In contrast, 137 Naxalites were killed and 171 were arrested by security forces over this period.
