The recent inauguration of new police facilities in Imodonge, Torit County, has been met with enthusiasm from local residents amid escalating crime rates. The multi-purpose law enforcement structures, funded by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), were celebrated as a significant boost to local security.

Luka Ohucholi Odu, the landlord of the land hosting the new facilities, expressed optimism about the development. "As a community, we believe that this positive development will greatly improve security in our area," Odu said.

The Imodonge project, while not the first police station funded by UNMISS in Eastern Equatoria, stands out due to its expansive design. The facility includes a spacious training ground, aimed at significantly increasing the number of police officers trained and deployed across the state. Major General James Manday Enock, Eastern Equatoria's Police Commissioner, emphasized the impact of the new station, stating, "The presence of this strong, well-equipped structure should make anyone considering a criminal career think twice – and reevaluate accordingly."

The decision to fund the construction was made following a joint request from local authorities and residents. Guy Griffin, Head of the UNMISS Field Office in Torit, highlighted the importance of the facility in fostering trust between the police and the community. "This facility will play a crucial role in building trust between the police and the people they serve and protect," Griffin said. He also noted that improved security could enhance civic and political engagement and encourage the safe return of internally displaced persons.

The new police station is expected to be a key factor in improving law enforcement capabilities and contributing to overall community safety in Torit County.
