US Captures Top Sinaloa Cartel Leaders Zambada and Guzmán López
Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, a longtime leader of the Sinaloa cartel, and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of 'El Chapo', were arrested by US authorities in Texas. Zambada is one of the world's most notorious drug traffickers. The arrests mark a significant step in US anti-narcotics efforts.
Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, a longtime leader of Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, and Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of infamous cartel leader 'El Chapo', were arrested by US authorities in Texas on Thursday, according to the US Justice Department.
For decades, Zambada, a leader of the powerful Sinaloa cartel alongside Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, was known for orchestrating criminal operations while maintaining a lower profile. A Mexican federal official reported that Zambada and Guzmán López arrived in the United States on a private plane and surrendered to authorities.
The US government had previously offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to Zambada's capture, given his long history of evading law enforcement. FBI Director Christopher Wray stated that Zambada and Guzmán López were responsible for trafficking 'tens of thousands of pounds of drugs into the United States, along with related violence', adding that they will now 'face justice in the United States'.
