Three civil services aspirants have tragically died after the basement of a coaching center in central Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar area flooded following heavy rainfall, officials said Saturday.
According to the Delhi Fire Department (DFS), they received a distress call about waterlogging at Rau's IAS Study Circle around 7 pm. The caller reported potential entrapment of individuals in the flooded basement.
DCP (Central Delhi) M Harshavardhan stated that an investigation is underway to determine how the rapid flooding occurred, trapping several individuals inside. Five fire tenders were dispatched, but the basement was already inundated when they arrived.
During a joint rescue operation by the NDRF, local police, and firefighters, the bodies of two female students and one male student were recovered. The authorities have yet to reveal the identities of the deceased.
The rescue operation extended past midnight, and distressed students held a protest, demanding accountability from the authorities.
Revenue Minister Atishi ordered Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to conduct an inquiry and submit a report within 24 hours. She emphasized that those responsible would be held accountable.
Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva and New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj blamed the AAP administration, alleging negligence in addressing repeated local appeals to clean the drains. Sachdeva urged for the resignation of Jal Board Minister Atishi and local MLA Durgesh Pathak due to alleged criminal negligence.
Preliminary investigations reveal the basement housed a library where several students were present. Rapid flooding necessitated the use of ropes for evacuation. Floating furniture added to the rescue operation's challenges.
Earlier in the week, a civil services aspirant died from electrocution in Patel Nagar following similar rainfall. Allegations of trapped individuals and an unresponsive local government have heightened tensions.
