MCD Cracks Down on Illegal Coaching Centres Post Fatal Flooding Incident

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is taking action against coaching centres violating norms following a flooding incident that claimed three lives. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated action against coaching centres flouting norms, following a tragic incident that claimed three lives due to flooding in a basement, MCD officials announced on Sunday.

The MCD has identified establishments running illegally and has begun a drive to take action against them. Last year, a survey was conducted of coaching centres after a massive fire in Mukharji Nagar, another coaching hub in North West Delhi, which forced many students to jump off the building to escape the blaze.

Officials stated that a high-level committee will be set up to look into the incident in central Delhi's Old Rajinder Nagar area. The flooding incident involved three civil services aspirants who were trapped in the basement of Rau's IAS Study Circle. The basement, operating illegally, had only one biometric-enabled entry and exit point, which failed during the flooding.

The MCD has already started action against coaching centres violating building by-laws. The negligence on part of the institute's management in ensuring safety measures has been highlighted. The storm drains, covered by encroachments, pose an additional challenge by preventing proper water drainage, leading to flooding. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has convened a meeting, and the high-level committee's formation will soon be announced.
