Kolkata Police have issued a warning that vehicle owners displaying obscene or derogatory messages could face legal action under the Motor Vehicle Act. This crackdown targets offensive messages related to caste, creed, or gender sentiments, often seen on the rear of private buses and trucks.
In a social media post, Kolkata Police highlighted a vehicle with a derogatory message and stressed that such acts could be deemed defamation under sections 499 IPC and 356(i) BNS. Although they could pursue legal action, police opted to first appeal to the vehicle owners' better judgement, resulting in voluntary removal of offensive content.
The initiative underscores efforts to maintain Kolkata’s reputation as a safe city for women, as the police urge citizens to avoid displaying such messages and help uphold social harmony.
