In a violent escalation, protesters in Gwadar, Pakistan attacked security forces deployed to safeguard their march on Monday. The attack resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to 16 others, according to the Pakistan army.

The nationalist ethnic Baloch movement has been leading these demonstrations for the past two days, blocking a strategic highway in demand for the release of alleged detained members. The army reported that the assaults were unprovoked and violent, causing significant harm to military personnel, including an officer.

Balochistan, Pakistan's southwestern province which borders Iran and Afghanistan, has been the epicenter of a long-standing low-level insurgency. Ethnic separatist groups in the area have been fighting for a greater share of the region's ample mineral wealth.
