The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has launched 'Operation Tiger,' targeting unauthorised street food vendors in the Mannagudda area and along Airport Road near Karnataka Polytechnic, officials said on July 29.
The operation has decongested Mangaluru's famous food street in Mannagudda, an area previously bustling with activity. Approximately 30 illegal stalls were removed, according to officials.
The drive, supervised by Deputy Commissioner Rekha Shetty, Health Officer Dr. Manjaiah Shetty, and revenue department officials, focused on vendors selling fast food items, including fish dishes, chaats, and egg preparations. Support was also provided by Barke and Kadri police stations for security and crowd control.
This enforcement action follows Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur's promise to address increasing public complaints about the obstruction of pedestrian movement and potential health risks posed by street vendors.
During the operation, four individuals who protested the clearance were detained by police as the MCC sought to enforce municipal regulations and maintain order.
Officials stated that this sweep is part of a broader campaign to regulate street vending and uphold the city's safety standards.
