India's Stand on Chinese Investments Remains Unchanged, Says Trade Minister
India's Trade Minister, Piyush Goyal, reaffirmed that there's no rethinking on allowing Chinese investments in the country despite recent recommendations. This comes amid India's efforts to scrutinize Chinese investments following 2020 border clashes. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman supported easing restrictions in non-sensitive sectors.
India is holding firm on its stance against Chinese investments, Trade Minister Piyush Goyal clarified on Tuesday. This declaration follows the government's annual economic survey which suggested that New Delhi should consider direct investments from China to help balance its trade deficit.
"There is no rethinking at present to support Chinese investments in the country," Goyal stated to reporters in New Delhi, qualifying that the economic survey's recommendations are non-binding.
India tightened its scrutiny on Chinese investments following the 2020 border clashes. Yet, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has endorsed the Chief Economic Adviser's suggestion to relax restrictions, particularly for non-sensitive sectors like solar panels and battery manufacturing.
