Son of 'El Chapo' Pleads Not Guilty to U.S. Drug Charges Amid Allegations of Kidnapping

Joaquin Guzman Lopez, son of notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman, pleaded not guilty to U.S. drug trafficking charges on Tuesday. This comes just days after his dramatic arrest, where he delivered Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada, his father's former partner, to U.S. authorities.

Guzman Lopez, indicted in 2023 along with three of his brothers—known collectively as the 'Chapitos'—on drug trafficking and money laundering charges, made his plea in a Chicago federal court. The charges relate to their leadership of the Sinaloa Cartel after their father's 2017 extradition. El Chapo is currently serving a life sentence in Colorado for multiple convictions.

U.S. officials allege Guzman Lopez tricked Zambada into boarding a plane in Mexico under the pretense of a real estate venture, only to bring him to the United States. Zambada also faces drug charges and has pleaded not guilty, with his lawyer disputing the U.S. authorities' version of events. Despite the controversy, U.S. authorities claim the 'Chapitos' revitalized their father's drug empire by embracing fentanyl, exacerbating the opioid epidemic.
