A loud explosion echoed through Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, around 7:40 p.m. local time, accompanied by a visible plume of smoke. 'The IDF carried out a targeted strike in Beirut on the commander responsible for the murder of the children in Majdal Shams and the killing of numerous additional Israeli civilians,' the Israeli Defence Forces confirmed in a statement.

No new civil defence instructions have been issued in Israel following the strike. The fate of the targeted commander remains uncertain, according to a senior Lebanese security source. Lebanon's national news agency reported that the Israeli strike targeted the vicinity of Hezbollah's Shura Council in the Haret Hreik neighbourhood. Tensions have been high in Beirut in anticipation of an Israeli response to the Golan Heights attack. Both Israel and the United States attribute the attack to Hezbollah, which denies involvement.
