Police vans were set on fire in Southport, and protesters dismantled garden walls to hurl bricks at officers and a mosque after speculation circulated on social media that the teenage suspect was Muslim. Despite the ferocity of the incident in the normally tranquil town, authorities confirmed it was not linked to terrorism.

Police have detained an unnamed 17-year-old male on charges of murder and attempted murder. The suspect, who was born in Britain, is believed to be responsible for the attack that also injured eight other children and two adults, with five children in critical condition. North West Ambulance Service reported that 39 police officers required treatment, with 27 hospitalized.

Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss condemned the actions, stating, "Offenders have destroyed garden walls to use the bricks against our officers and set public cars on fire, damaging those parked in the Mosque car park. This is no way to treat a community still reeling from Monday's events."

The attack targeted a Taylor Swift-themed dance and yoga event for children, shocking the nation. Swift's fans have so far raised £270,000 ($346,000) to assist the victims' families and the hospital where some children are receiving treatment.

Authorities reported that the violence escalated when a large group, believed to include English Defence League supporters, attacked a mosque in the town.
